INTENDED USE

The geneMAP™ Borellia Detection Kit, is a qualitative in vitro assay for the detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato strains; B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii, B. afzelii, B. andersonii, B. bissettii, B. valaisiana, B. lusitaniae, B. japonica, B. tanukii, B. turdi, B. sinica, B. miyamotoi, B. mayonii, B. spielmanii, B. bavariensis, B. kurtenbachii. The Borrelia Detection Kit does not distinguish between the Borrelia genospecies.

Lyme borreliosis is a systemic disease caused by infection with the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. It is currently the most common arthropod-borne disease in the United States, and thousands of cases are reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention every year. At least three genospecific pathogens have been characterized in humans: B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii and B. garinii. In North America, only B. burgdorferi sensu stricto is endemic, while three genospesis are endemic in Europe. The most affected organs are skin, joints, heart and central and peripheral nervous systems. Neurological manifestations of B. burgdorferi infection, known as Lyme neuroborreliosis, occur in 5 to 20% of patients in North America. These include aseptic meningitis, facial nerve palsy, radiculitis, peripheral neuropathy, myositis and encephalopathy.
